
Preventing Overheating Starts Before the Warning Light Comes On
The best way to reduce the risk of your European vehicle overheating this summer is to address small cooling system concerns before they become larger problems. Changes in coolant level, temperature behavior, cooling fan operation, smells, leaks, or warning messages can all provide early clues that the system needs attention.
Not every cooling system failure can be predicted or prevented. However, paying attention to changes, keeping up with inspections, and having concerns tested early can reduce the risk of being caught off guard by an overheating vehicle.
Summer heat does not usually create a cooling system problem by itself. Instead, higher temperatures, stop-and-go traffic, long drives, and air conditioning use may place more demand on a system that already has a weakness.
Pay Attention to Changes in Coolant and Temperature
One of the most important things you can do is notice when your vehicle starts behaving differently. Your temperature gauge should normally stay within a consistent range. A gauge that begins rising higher than usual, especially while idling or sitting in traffic, may be an early sign that the cooling system is struggling.
A low coolant warning should also be taken seriously. In a properly operating closed cooling system, coolant should not need to be added repeatedly. If the level continues to drop, there is usually a reason that should be investigated. Adding more coolant may seem like a simple solution, but it does not explain why the coolant level dropped.
Other warning signs or changes to watch for include:
- A coolant or temperature warning message
- A sweet or hot smell after driving
- Dried coolant residue around the engine bay
- Fluid under the vehicle
- The cooling fan running more often than usual
- The heater not working as well as expected
- Temperature changes during stop-and-go traffic
- Needing to add coolant more than once
These signs do not always mean the vehicle is about to overheat, but they may show that the cooling system needs attention before summer heat makes the concern more noticeable.
Use the Correct Coolant and Cooling System Procedures
European vehicles often require manufacturer-approved coolant rather than a universal fluid. Different coolant types may use different formulas and may not be designed to mix together.
Using the wrong coolant can affect corrosion protection, seals, cooling system performance, and the long-term condition of internal components. That is why choosing coolant based only on color may not be enough. Two coolants that look similar may not meet the same manufacturer requirements.
The cooling system may also need a specific filling and bleeding process after service or repair. If air remains trapped in the system, coolant may not circulate the way it should. This can lead to uneven temperature control, warning lights, heater concerns, or overheating.
Proper cooling system service is not only about adding fluid. It also means using the correct coolant, filling the system properly, removing trapped air, and confirming that the system is operating as designed.
European Cooling Systems May Need Specialized Testing
Some BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Land Rover models use electronically controlled thermostats, electric water pumps, or advanced monitoring strategies that require model-specific testing. These systems can sometimes develop problems before you notice any obvious symptoms of overheating.
For example, many BMW models equipped with electric main coolant pumps rely on electronic control rather than a traditional belt-driven pump. When an electric water pump begins to fail, the vehicle may display a cooling system warning before obvious signs of overheating appear. Having the cooling system tested when you first notice the warning message may help identify the problem before the vehicle overheats.
Do Not Wait for Your Vehicle to Fully Overheat
Many drivers wait until a warning light appears or steam comes from under the hood before scheduling an inspection. By that point, the engine may already be running outside its normal temperature range. If your vehicle is losing coolant, running slightly hotter than normal, or showing repeated warning messages, it is worth having the concern inspected before a long trip or before the hottest part of summer.
The same is true if the vehicle runs normally while moving but gets hotter while idling. That difference may point to an airflow, fan, circulation, or cooling system concern that should be tested before it becomes more serious. Testing these changes early may help identify the cause before the vehicle leaves you stranded or develops more expensive engine damage.
What a Cooling System Inspection May Include
A preventive cooling system inspection should look beyond the coolant level alone. Depending on the vehicle and its symptoms, Westgate may inspect expansion tanks, coolant pipes, thermostat housings, water pumps, radiators, and hose connections for signs of leaks, wear, or failure.
The inspection may include:
- Checking coolant level and condition
- Looking for visible leaks, staining, or dried residue
- Inspecting accessible cooling system components and connections
- Testing whether the system is holding pressure
- Checking cooling fan operation
- Evaluating temperature readings and warning messages
- Inspecting the water pump and thermostat where appropriate
- Checking for airflow restrictions around the radiator
- Confirming that the correct coolant is being used

A Westgate Client’s Hidden Coolant Leak
Westgate owner Zach Haver shared a recent experience involving one of our clients. The client brought their European vehicle into the shop after noticing that the coolant level kept dropping, even though no overheating warning had appeared. They had already added coolant several times.
During our inspection and cooling system pressure test, we found a leaking water pump. The leaking coolant was burning off before it reached the ground, which meant there were no obvious puddles under the vehicle. Although the vehicle had not experienced a major overheating event, the system was clearly losing coolant. If the leak continued to worsen or the water pump failed completely, the client could have been left stranded.
